Dax Quick Facts
Dax (pronounced [daks] & nbsp ;; in Gascon Dacs) is a commune in the south-west of France, located in the Landes department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). It belongs to the former province of Gascony. It is a busy spa. Its inhabitants are called the Dacquois.
On the coat of arms of the city of Dax are a tower (representing the fortified city), a lion (symbol of Aquitaine) and the wavy sea (representation of the river Adour, the river port and the activity very active port until the nineteenth century), as well as the ancient medieval name of the city “ACQS “, derived from the Low-Latin CIVITAS DE AQVIS The motto is ” Regia Semper ” ( Always Royal ), that of a free city, which is only a royal authority, and therefore emancipated from a seigniorial tutelage.
The first name of the city was Aquæ Tarbellicæ, which means “the waters of the Tarbelles ” for the Romans who had made it the capital of the Tarbelli pagus. The name will become successively Acqs, of Acqs, then finally Dax. In Gascon, the name of the city is written Dacs. Finally, the Basque neighbors give it the name of Akize where we recognize the Latin root.
Dax has been famous since the earliest times for its warm waters, for bullfighting in the Landes and in Spain and, among other things, for rugby (the Dacquoise Sports Union was created in 1904).
