His father, a postal worker, died in 1954 of a heart attack while John was only two years old. He studied at Affton High School, where he played theater and football. He then moved to Southwest Missouri State University and took advantage of the university’s good theatrical program, including Kathleen Turner and Tess Harper as classmates. He earned his first major role in 1986 in True Stories, David Byrne, where he plays a good man in search of the woman of his life. But it is with his character of Dan Conner, comic father of family in the sitcom cult favorite of Americans Roseanne, that he reaches the celebrity. He played this role from 1988 to 1997.
