Maureen Dowd is the fifth child of a Catholic Irish-American family whose father works for the municipal police. In 1973, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the Catholic University of America (Washington, District of Columbia) and was hired as secretary to the Washington Star newspaper before becoming a journalist. Following the bankruptcy of the Star in 1981, she joined the big weekly Time Magazine then left to join the New York Times as a reporter for the municipal section in 1983. She will fill the vacancy left by editorialist Anna Quindlen, who left for Newsweek in 1995. Quindlen and Dowd sometimes write articles together on feminist themes .
Dowd denies belonging to any political chapel, although some observers classify it as progressive. It has an ironic, caustic humor, both for the George W. Bush government and the Clinton administration in its day. His political positions have made him a little isolated in the NY Times after the media realignment that followed the attacks of September 11, 2001. [ref. & Nbsp; necessary]
