His father, Arthur Samuel Newman, was Jewish Simon Newman and Hannah Cohn, his grandparents, were immigrants from Hungary and Poland, and his mother, Theresa Fetzer or Fetsko (Slovak: Terézia Fecková), was Catholic with Slovak and Hungarian roots. Paul Newman also considered himself a Jew, because he said “it’s more than a challenge”.

He spends a quiet adolescence in the Shaker Heights neighborhood, hence the nickname “Shaker Heights Boy” (“Shaker Heights Boy”) that he is sometimes given. His father, owner of a sporting goods store, then intends to take over his suite.

During the Second World War, he wants to become a pilot but we discover that he is color-blind. From 1943 to 1945, he participated in the Pacific War as a radio / machine gunner for a Grumman TBF Avenger. All his comrades are killed aboard the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), hit during the battle of the Gulf of Leyte. He himself is later injured. This incident forbids him to practice the sport and he devotes himself to the theater.

He studied drama first at Yale Drama School, then at the New York Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg. Soon, he appeared on Broadway in plays such as Picnic (1953) and The Desperate Hours (1955), which brought him fame.
