Pier Angeli’s Biography
Its beginnings and MGM
Born in Cagliari in Sardinia, she began in a film, after being spotted by the director Leonide Moguy, with Vittorio De Sica, Domani è troppo tardi. She made her debut in Hollywood and MGM in Teresa, her first American film. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, this film was also the one that saw the beginnings of Rod Steiger and John Ericson. Enthusiastic critics compared her to Greta Garbo, winning a Golden Globe Award for the role of New Star Of The Year – Actress. Under contract with MGM in the 1950s, she appeared in a series of films. In Miracle in Tunis (The Light Touch) with Stewart Granger, she brought a slight touch of innocence to the film. Film projects on the story of Romeo and Juliet with Pier Angeli and Marlon Brando fell apart when an Anglo-Italian co-production was announced. His subsequent films were honest without being exciting & nbsp ;: Story of Three Loves in 1953 with Kirk Douglas, Sombrero in which she replaced Ava Gardner, and Flame and the flesh in which she lost her husband in favor of Lana Turner.
The MGM, having discovered in Leslie Caron a new ingenuous continent, lent Pier Angeli to other studios. She turned for Warner Bros. The Silver Chalice which marked Paul Newman’s film debut and made Mam’zelle Nitouche with Fernandel. For Paramount, she was to play the role of Anna Magnani’s daughter in The Tattooed Rose, but pregnant, the role was for her twin sister, Marisa Pavan, who was nominated for an Oscar for this role. Pier Angeli was still on loan, this time to the Columbia for Port Africa (1956). For her return to the MGM, she played Paul Newman’s wife in Marked by Hate (James Dean was to be the star of this movie, but Newman recovered that role with Dean’s death). She was indifferent in Les Vendanges (1957) with Mel Ferrer and John Kerr and ended her contract in The Mad of the Circus with Danny Kaye.
End of career and private life
In the 1950s, Pier Angeli had become engaged with Kirk Douglas, according to his biography. In 1954, Angeli had a relationship with James Dean and there was a lot of speculation about a possible marriage. However, under the pressure of her mother, she put an end to this adventure and married the actor / singer Vic Damone. This marriage ended in a divorce in 1959, followed by a mediated battle in court for the custody of their son. In 1962, she married the second Italian composer Armando Trovaioli with whom she had another son. This marriage also ended in a divorce in 1969. Just before his death, Pier Angeli spoke of his relationship with James Dean and confided: “There was only one love in my life and it was James Dean “.
During the 1960s and until 1970, the actress returned to live and work in Britain and Europe. During this period, few of his films attracted attention, aside from his great performance with Richard Attenborough in The Silence of Anger (1960). She played with Stewart Granger in Sodom and Gomorrah (1963), in the role of Lot’s wife. She still played a short role in The Battle of the Bulge (1965). It seemed that she could revive her career when she was taken to play a role in The Godfather, but she died shortly before filming. 39 years old, alone and discouraged, suffering from nervous problems and financial difficulties, Pier Angeli died as a result of anaphylactic shock after receiving a tranquilizer from her doctor as she was back in Hollywood with Octaman. A rumor that his death was actually a suicide has been circulating but has never been officially confirmed.
She is buried in the Bulvis Cemetery in Rueil-Malmaison in the Hauts-de-Seine.
