Renee Adoree’s Biography
A daughter of circus artists, Renée Adorée participated in performances since the age of five with her parents. She began her career as an actress and performed with a troupe in Europe. When the First World War broke out she fled Russia, where she gave performances, for London. She then goes to New York where she is a theater actress, until the opportunity to work in the cinema is presented.
In 1920, the name Renée Adorée was given to her by the studio, and she appeared in her first film, The Strongest by Raoul Walsh. In the new year 1920, she met Tom Moore (1883-1955), 15 years older than her. Tom Moore and his brothers were Hollywood hit actors. Six weeks after their meeting, Renée Adoree married Tom Moore on February 12, 1921, in his home in Beverly Hills. The idyll does not last and in 1925 she married a second time with Sherman Gill.
Despite its small size, its sensual beauty and penetrating eyes give it a fascinating presence in black and white. Her biggest role is Melisandra in the melodrama The Big Parade, which becomes one of MGM’s greatest hits of all time and which historians consider to be one of the best silent movies. This film, whose distribution also included John Gilbert, is still aired on television.
At the advent of the talking cinema, Renée Adorée was one of the few actresses whose voice carried enough to continue playing. She played with Lon Chaney and her former brother-in-law Owen Moore, made three other movies with John Gilbert, and shot four movies with another famous actor: Ramón Novarro. In 1930, she had shot in forty-four films. She was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was forced to leave the planks.
She lived for a few more years, and died a few days after her thirty-fifth birthday. She is buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood.
For her contributions to the film industry, Renée Adorée has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 1601 Vine Street.
