Robert Frost’s Biography

Robert Frost was born to a father, William Prescott Frost Junior, from Tiverton, Devon, England, and a mother, Scottish-born Isabelle Moodie. His grandfather works as a supervisor in a factory in New England. His father was first a teacher and then editor of a newspaper in San Francisco where he will be an unfortunate candidate for mayor of the city. After his death on May 5, 1885, the family moved to Massachusetts. Robert graduated from high school in 1892. Frost’s mother joined Swedenborg Church and Robert was baptized in this church.

Known for singing rural life in his work, Frost actually grew up in the city. He publishes his first poem in his high school magazine, then attends Dartmouth College two months long enough to be accepted into the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. After leaving school, Robert helps his mother distribute newspapers and then works in a filament factory.

In 1894, he sold his first poem, My Butterfly: An Elegy, published on November 8, 1894, in an independent New York publishing house for $ 15, equivalent today in purchasing power to at least 300 dollars. Proud of his feat, he marries Elinor Miriam White (1873-1938), but she does not agree until he finishes his studies at St. Lawrence University. They get married in Lawrence, Massachusetts on December 19, 1895.

Between 1897 and 1899, Frost studied at Harvard, but he had to stop studying prematurely because of illness. Shortly before dying, his grandfather bought a farm for Robert and Elinor in Derry, New Hampshire. Robert works on this farm for nine years, writing early in the morning. His breeding was unsuccessful, he returned to teaching and became an English teacher at the Pinkerton Academy in New Hampshire from 1906 to 1911, and then at New Hampshire Normal School (now Plymouth State University). Plymouth.

In 1912 Frost left with his family for Britain, settling first in Beaconsfield, a small town near London. His first collection of poetry, Will A Boy, is published the following year. In England, he has some important encounters, like Edward Thomas, T.E. Hulme, and Ezra Pound.

During the First World War, in 1915, Frost returned to the United States and bought a farm in Franconia, New Hampshire where he began writing again. This property served as a summer residence for his family until 1938. Today this house is a museum in his name. During the years 1916-1920, 1923-1924, and 1927-1938, Frost taught English at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

He won the Pulitzer Poetry Prize four times: In 1924 for New Hampshire: Poem With Notes and Grace Notes, 1931 for Collected Poems, 1937 for A Further Range, and 1943 for A Witness Tree. / p>

He died in 1963 and is buried in Bennington Cemetery, Vermont. This epitaph can be read on his grave: I had a lover’s quarrel with the world.
