Cyd Charisse’s Biography

After ballet lessons in her early childhood, she joined the formation of Ballets Russes in 1934 with which she performed under the pseudonyms of Celia Siderova and Maria Istromena. She married in 1939 in Paris the dancer Nico Charisse. The name of Cyd that she will adopt later is inspired by the nickname given to her by her younger brother when he was little, ” Sid ” (derived from ” sis “).

After the breakup of the troupe at the beginning of the Second World War, she returned to Hollywood where she landed a few small uncredited dance roles before being noticed for her pas de deux with Fred Astaire in Ziegfeld Follies in 1946. This performance gives him a seven-year contract with MGM.

In 1942, she has a son named Nico, called “Nicky “, Charisse. She divorced Nico Charisse Sr. in 1947. She remarried in 1948 with singer and actor Tony Martin with whom she had a son in 1950 named Tony Martin Jr. In 1952, Gene Kelly chose her as a partner for the number – without words – Let’s sing in the rain, Broadway Melody. Nicknamed “The Legs” (“Legs “) just as Lauren Bacall was nicknamed “The Look ” (“look “), she had her legs insured for $ 5 million US that same year.

Cyd Charisse surrounded by Laura Bush and George W. Bush, receiving the Medal of Arts and Letters .

Although she is not a singer (she will be dubbed in all her films), her visual and artistic qualities allow her to land her first lead role in Vincente Minnelli’s Tous en scène, in which she meets Fred Astaire. In the 1950s, a number of successful musical films followed, including the star of Rouben Mamoulian’s La Belle de Moscou in 1957, a remake of Ernst Lubitsch’s Ninotchka.

The decline of the genre in the 1960s is also his, but it will have attached its name to the great hours of the musical. However, she continues to play in a few films like Something’s Got to Give, an unfinished 1962 film by George Cukor in which Marilyn Monroe played a few scenes before she died.

In 1990, she appears in the video of the song Alright, starring Janet Jackson
